So, if you like Rembrandt, or Whistler, or Ingres, or Degas, or Sargent, or Le Brun, or Cassat, or, or, or … give copying them a whirl when you get to Part 2. But art is all about being an individual. People really should learn to get it right first before they winged off into individualism. Who those artists are is really up to you.īargue was strictly a Classical Realist guy, and there were reasons for that. If the subjects appeal to you, start looking for drawings by artists you admire and copying them as you would paintings by artists you admire. There are of course lots of wonderful examples of 16th- to 19th-century drawings of animals, bird, flowers, nude women, and people of color out there. So you’ll have to explore anything else on your own.
What Bargue’s Drawing Course does include European men, women, and babies horses, dogs and nude European men and boys (in outline form because you’re supposed to be able to put in all the musculature by Part 3). I guess that was really as much as anyone could reasonable stuff into a Drawing Course. There are reasons for the lack of women, explained in Ackerman’s book, but many famous artists at the time (the mid to late 19th century) were making and selling works with people of color, so I don’t understand that oversight at all. If I had any complaints about Bargue’s Drawing Course, they would be that Part 2 lacks any people of color and Part 3 lacks females. I made these PDFs for my personal use in my personal atelier. The copyright of the photos of the 196 plates of the Drawing Course is held by the Musee Goupil of Bordeaux, which has given its permission for the plates to be enlarged by laser printers for educational purposes only–that is, as models for copying in classrooms or private ateliers or studios.

Legally people are allowed to download the PDFs I created from the Charles Bargue “Drawing Course” book because it states on the copyright page: Painting A Portrait By De Laszlo, also hosted on WP, is really the same thing. It’s more of a weigh station for art students looking for a hand up.
